Hope as a SpiritualPractice: Finding Grounded Optimism

Todd Boston
Todd Boston
Jan 21, 2021
5 min de lecture

In this brief piece, Todd Boston approaches hope not as blind optimism or passive waiting, but as an active spiritual practice—a conscious choice to orient oneself toward possibility even in the face of uncertainty. The teaching invites listeners to examine what hope actually means in contemplative and dharmic contexts, moving beyond sentiment into the realm of genuine inner work and alignment with reality.

What Is Hope Beyond Wishful Thinking?

Hope occupies a curious place in spiritual teaching. It is neither the naïve optimism that denies real suffering, nor the cynicism that assumes nothing can change. Todd Boston's approach to hope centers on understanding it as a deliberate practice—a way of relating to the future and to uncertainty that is grounded in awareness rather than denial.

In many contemplative traditions, hope is linked to faith, not in a religious sense necessarily, but as confidence in the process of transformation itself. It is the recognition that consciousness can shift, that suffering can be worked with, and that the present moment contains seeds of possibility. This is different from hoping for a specific outcome; rather, it is a fundamental orientation toward life that acknowledges difficulty while remaining open to what might emerge.

Hope as an Active Choice, Not a Feeling

One of the deepest misconceptions about hope is that it is something we feel or that happens to us. In spiritual practice, hope becomes something we cultivate—a practice we engage in repeatedly, like meditation or conscious breathing. When we meet difficulty, resistance to despair becomes a form of inner agency.

This reframing matters especially in dark times. Rather than waiting to feel hopeful, we can ask: What would it mean to choose hope right now, in this moment, given what I actually know? This is not about ignoring pain or pretending circumstances are different. It is about refusing to collapse into the story that nothing can change, that effort is futile, or that suffering must define the future.

Why Hope Matters in Contemplative Practice

From a dharmic perspective, hope is intimately connected to motivation and effort. The Buddhist concept of viriya (energy or right effort) is inseparable from a basic trust that practice works—that attention, kindness, and awareness actually transform the mind and heart. Without some form of hope, this effort collapses into mere performance or habit.

Hope also serves as a counterweight to the insights of impermanence and non-self that are central to many meditation practices. These insights can, if misunderstood, lead to nihilism or apathy—a sense that nothing matters because everything changes. Hope preserves the commitment to practice and relationship even in the context of this deeper understanding. It says: yes, everything changes, and because it does, change toward greater wisdom and compassion is possible.

The Relationship Between Hope and Acceptance

A paradox emerges when hope meets acceptance. Acceptance, in spiritual terms, does not mean resignation or passivity. Rather, it means seeing clearly what is—the actual circumstances, one's actual capacity, the real texture of this moment. Hope, paradoxically, deepens when acceptance is genuine.

When we stop arguing with reality or pretending it is different than it is, energy becomes available. We can respond rather than react. We can invest hope precisely where change is possible, rather than dissipating it on fantasy. The couple facing a difficult diagnosis, the activist confronting systemic injustice, the meditator struggling with restless mind—in each case, hope grounded in clear seeing becomes fiercer and more stable than hope built on denial.

How to Practice Hope

Practicing hope is not complicated, though it requires consistency. Some approaches include:

  • Noticing where hope lives in you already. What areas of your life, no matter how small, still contain openness and possibility? Start there. Begin to recognize the texture of hope when it is present.
  • Examining the stories of hopelessness. When despair arises, inquiry is useful. What specific story am I telling? Is it actually true, or am I conflating fear with fact?
  • Returning to the body and breath. Hope is not merely intellectual. The nervous system can learn a different orientation. Practices like gentle movement, breathing, and grounding help embody a sense of groundedness and possibility.
  • Connecting with others. Hope is contagious. When we witness another person's resilience, capacity, or commitment to growth, our own hope strengthens. Community and witnessing matter.
  • Aligning action with values. Hope becomes real when we act in accord with what we believe is possible and necessary. Small, consistent actions reinforce the sense that effort matters.

Hope in Times of Genuine Darkness

It is worth noting that hope is not naive about darkness. Some periods of life—grief, illness, loss, systemic oppression—are genuinely difficult. Hope does not minimize this. Instead, it says: even here, even now, there is something in me that can choose. There is something that can learn, grow, or simply endure with some grace. That capacity is real, and recognizing it is itself a form of freedom.

This is particularly important in contemplative contexts where practitioners may encounter dark nights of the soul, difficult meditative states, or the dissolution of familiar meaning-structures. Hope does not promise that these passages will be comfortable, but it holds that they can be navigated and can lead to deeper wisdom.

Where to Go From Here

If this reflection on hope resonates, consider exploring what hope actually means in your own life right now. What specific circumstances or relationships contain the most and least hope for you? What would it feel like to practice hope deliberately, as a discipline rather than a feeling? Spiritual teachers and contemplative practices across traditions offer resources for deepening this capacity—from traditional meditation practice to shadow work to simply sitting with a trusted friend and speaking about what seems possible and what seems blocked. The practice of hope is always available, even in small and quiet ways.

Des questions ?

Questions fréquemment posées

No. In spiritual practice, hope is grounded in clear seeing of reality—accepting what is while remaining open to positive change. Unlike wishful thinking, which denies difficulty, hope acknowledges real suffering while refusing to collapse into despair or the belief that nothing can change.
Start small: notice where hope already exists in your life, even in tiny pockets. Examine the specific stories driving hopelessness—are they absolutely true, or fear mixed with fact? Return to your body through breath and grounding practices, and consider small aligned actions that reinforce the sense that effort matters.
Hope and acceptance work together. Acceptance means seeing clearly what actually is, without denial. When acceptance is genuine, energy becomes available for genuine change. Hope then becomes focused and stronger, rooted in reality rather than fantasy.
Hope fuels the effort and motivation to practice. Without some form of trust that practice works—that attention and awareness actually transform the mind—effort collapses. Hope also prevents nihilism, allowing practitioners to engage deeply even while understanding impermanence and non-self.
Hope grounded in clear seeing acknowledges real constraints and genuine injustice. It does not minimize systemic oppression or pretend circumstances are equal. Instead, it asks where agency and effort can be invested—a question that looks different depending on one's actual position and capacity.
Hope can absolutely be practiced and cultivated deliberately, like meditation or mindfulness. Rather than waiting to feel hopeful, you can choose hope as a conscious orientation and practice returning to it repeatedly when despair arises.
