While popular advice suggests "trusting your feelings," not all feelings are reliable guides for action. Fear-based emotions arise from the conditioned mind—shaped by past beliefs, childhood experiences, and interpretations of reality—and often mislead us. True intuition emerges from presence, a state of stillness beyond thought, and carries a distinct energetic signature: quiet strength, peace, and certainty without anxiety. By cultivating awareness of where our feelings originate and learning to recognize the calm knowing that arises from presence rather than reactivity, we can make decisions from genuine wisdom rather than ego-driven fear.

What Does It Mean to "Trust Your Feelings"?

The common advice to "trust your feelings" requires unpacking. Tolle distinguishes between three aspects: acknowledging feelings, being present as an observing witness to them, and actually using them as a reliable guide for action. Acknowledging and observing feelings is essential—they carry information and deserve attention. However, using them as the sole basis for decisions often proves problematic, because feelings originate from different sources within us, and not all sources are equally reliable.

This distinction matters because the mind easily confuses fear-based reactivity with intuitive knowing. A feeling that arises as nervous energy, urgency, or anxiety typically originates from the conditioned mind responding to perceived threats. By contrast, authentic intuition carries a different quality entirely: a quiet, confident sense of rightness without explanatory urgency.

How Does Conditioning Distort Our Emotional Perception?

The conditioned mind filters reality through layers of accumulated beliefs, childhood experiences, cultural narratives, and even random inputs like movies or overheard stories. When the mind perceives a person or situation, it does not see what is actually present—it overlays an interpretation based on these filters. Tolle illustrates this through an anecdote from his time in Glastonbury, England.

A young woman rented a room in his cottage. After the first night, she announced she had to leave: "I can't stay here. What's wrong? It's just a feeling and I've always listened to my feelings. I just can't say it, there's something not right." Tolle later learned that she had feared he might harm her in the night, based on nothing concrete—only on her interpretation of his quiet demeanor and perhaps associations with scary movies. Her feeling was real; her interpretation of reality was inaccurate. She had filtered the situation through fear and past conditioning, creating a false narrative that felt entirely true to her.

This pattern repeats constantly in human life. The mind sees a partner's silence and interprets rejection. It observes a friend's reservation and concludes judgment. It notes an unfamiliar person's calm and suspects danger. None of these interpretations reflect what is actually present; they reflect the mind's conditioning. Yet because the feeling accompanying the misinterpretation is intense, people often treat it as truth.

What Is the Difference Between Emotion and Intuition?

Tolle explains that intuition does not arise from the conditioned mind at all. While reactive emotions carry the fingerprints of fear, judgment, and narrative complexity, intuition carries a distinctly different energetic signature. There are several markers of true intuition:

  • Absence of negativity: Intuition is not tinged with anger, fear, resentment, or other emotional reactivity. A fear-based feeling may convince you someone is dangerous; intuition knows with peaceful certainty whether an action aligns with you.
  • Quiet strength: Intuitive knowing does not broadcast itself with nervous energy or urgency. Instead, there is a calm, steady quality to it—a confidence that requires no justification.
  • Peaceful certainty: When an intuitive knowing arrives, it arrives with peace. Even if the intuition reveals that something is not right for you, the knowing itself is accompanied by stillness rather than agitation.
  • Lack of explanation: You may not be able to articulate why an intuitive sense is true. That inability to explain is not a weakness—it indicates the knowing comes from beyond thought, from a deeper intelligence.

In the Glastonbury example, if Tolle had reacted to the woman's announcement with anger, accusation, or wounded ego—if he had insisted she honor her advance deposit or accused her of being unfair—those reactions would have come from his conditioned mind's need to defend a sense of self. Instead, his response was simple acceptance. When she later decided to stay after the second night (having realized her initial fear was unfounded), his response again was uncomplicated permission. No narrative about the wasted advertisement, no resentment about her wavering commitment. From that spacious non-reactivity, she was able to live in his home and learn simply through presence, without explanation or teaching.

How Does the Ego Complicate Situations Through Story-Making?

The ego has a vested interest in creating and reinforcing stories. Whenever someone does not behave as conventionally expected, the ego immediately constructs a narrative: "She changed her mind—how unreliable. How unfair to me. I wasted money on an advertisement." The ego also loves to make others wrong, because when you identify someone as wrong, the ego automatically becomes right, thereby strengthening its fragile sense of separate self.

This story-making is a device for self-strengthening. The ego is inherently deficient—it knows itself only through comparison, judgment, and the assertion of being right. When you dwell on stories of how someone wronged you, failed you, or behaved unfairly, you are feeding the ego's hunger. The more you tell the story to others, the more you strengthen it in yourself.

Tolle notes that whenever he has encountered situations that did not go smoothly—when people did not do what was expected—he observed that if he responded with immediate ego-driven narrative and reactivity, the situation became complicated and conflict-laden. But when he remained present and non-reactive, the situation remained simple. Life itself is not complicated; complication arises from our reactive narratives layered on top of events.

How Can We Distinguish Between Adding Baggage and Responding Wisely?

Not all responses to situations are ego-driven. The question is: Are you adding unnecessary baggage, or are you responding from presence? Unnecessary baggage is reactivity—the mental and emotional elaboration that strengthens the ego. A wise response, by contrast, comes from seeing the situation clearly and acting in alignment with what is genuinely appropriate.

In practical terms, when the young woman decided to stay after the second night, Tolle could theoretically have said, "It's too late—I've already found someone else," or "Perhaps it's better if you go, since you might change your mind again tomorrow." These responses would not have been lies; they could all be practically justified. Yet if they arose from the ego's desire to punish her indecision, they would be adding unnecessary baggage. His actual response—simple acceptance—left room for what actually was.

The distinction comes down to this: Is there a peaceful clarity and acceptance present, or is there a narrative of being wronged that the ego is savoring? When you respond from presence, you respond to what is actually present. When you respond from ego, you respond to the story your mind has created about what is present.

What Role Does Presence Play in Accessing True Intuition?

Intuition does not come from thinking about a situation. It emerges from being present—from a state of stillness and awareness that precedes and transcends thought. When you are fully present, you are not filtering reality through conditioning, memory, or fear. You are in direct contact with what is. From that contact, a deeper intelligence can express itself.

Cultivating presence requires you to notice when you are caught in mental narrative and gently return attention to the present moment. It requires observing your feelings without immediately acting on them or believing they are true. Over time, as you practice presence, you develop the ability to distinguish between the nervous energy of fear-based emotion and the quiet knowing of intuition.

This is not something that can be fully explained in words. As Tolle emphasizes, you have to find out for yourself through lived experience what a deeper feeling coming from presence actually feels like and how it differs from something arising from the conditioned mind. That discovery requires patience, honest self-observation, and repeated encounters with both types of knowing.

What Happens When We Make Others Wrong?

Making someone wrong is one of the ego's favorite devices. When you decide someone has behaved badly, treated you unfairly, or failed to live up to expectations, the ego gets a hit of validation—it gets to be right, and thereby more real. This is one reason why people unconsciously repeat the pattern of making others wrong: it temporarily relieves the ego's insecurity.

However, making others wrong has profound consequences. It closes off genuine understanding. It hardens relationships. It generates the narratives that lead to ongoing conflict. Tolle describes a situation where a man was accused of fathering a child. Rather than arguing about the paternity or negotiating the situation, he simply refused to engage with the story at all. He would not admit wrongdoing, would not defend himself—he simply would not play the game of being made wrong. This refusal to engage in the story-making process is itself a form of presence and wisdom.

Where to Go From Here

To deepen your capacity to distinguish intuition from fear-based emotion, begin with simple observation. When you experience a strong feeling or impulse, pause and ask: Is there peaceful certainty here, or is there nervous energy? Does the feeling arise with an explanation and a narrative, or does it arrive as simple knowing? Am I adding stories to this situation, or am I responding to what is actually present?

Practice staying present during moments when you feel the urge to react. Notice the feeling without immediately acting on it. Notice whether you are constructing a narrative of being wronged or mistreated. The capacity to observe this without judgment is itself the beginning of freedom from reactivity.

Over time, as your presence deepens, you will notice that intuitive knowing has a quality entirely distinct from fear-based emotion. You will find that when you act from that place of presence and quiet knowing, your actions tend to flow more naturally and create less unnecessary complication in your life and relationships. That is not because you have learned a technique, but because you are finally listening to an intelligence deeper than the conditioned mind—the intelligence of life itself expressing through you.

[0:12] can we trust our feelings can be trust

[0:17] our somatic reading of life are you able

[0:20] to say something about intuition which

[0:23] is not the same but interests me as well

[0:29] can we trust our feelings now often you

[0:33] hear people say trust your feelings I

[0:42] would suggest however that that's not

[0:48] necessarily true

[0:53] acknowledge your feelings yes be there

[0:57] as the observing presence for your

[1:01] feelings yes be aware of your feelings

[1:03] accept that they are there trust which

[1:08] means to take them to be the truth or

[1:13] the truth for you or using them as a

[1:19] guide to correct or skillful action that

[1:24] may be doubtful because it depends where

[1:27] these feelings arise in you a little

[1:35] anecdote from my life to illustrate that

[1:39] when I lived in England in the country

[1:42] in that alternative town Glastonbury for

[1:47] three years I lived in a cottage and

[1:54] once a month I would travel to London or

[1:58] other cities in my beloved Russian made

[2:03] Lada car

[2:07] err to do a workshop and usually a

[2:13] weekend workshop called things like

[2:20] transcending time or be here now nothing

[2:26] much has changed except that might the

[2:30] average number of people had was about

[2:32] ten

[2:35] and since of my income was not enough I

[2:39] had to rent out a room upstairs my

[2:42] cottage so I have over these three years

[2:48] three years a few people it was a second

[2:53] room which I also also cage near I

[2:56] thought anyway the room became vacant I

[2:59] advertise in the local local paper

[3:01] several people came to apply and and

[3:04] finally chose a young woman who had just

[3:07] been offered a job in that town she came

[3:11] she moved in and after the first night

[3:14] in her room she came down for breakfast

[3:17] into the kitchen which was a sad kitchen

[3:19] and she said I can't stay here what's

[3:25] wrong it's just it's just a feeling and

[3:28] I've always listened to my feelings I

[3:29] just I just can't say it there's

[3:31] something not right so it's very nervous

[3:35] and I say okay that's fine and that she

[3:41] found that very disconcerting because

[3:43] she had it expected a more conventional

[3:45] response which would have been what I've

[3:49] to interview tour all these people have

[3:51] chosen you and now what you doing this

[3:55] to me

[3:56] and you're not getting your rent money

[3:58] back that you paid in advance

[4:00] but I said okay I'll give you a money

[4:02] back it's fine so she was even more

[4:04] confused after that

[4:09] and I said oh he said I've spent one

[4:12] more night or two more nights she spends

[4:15] the second night and then in the morning

[4:17] she said no I think I'll stay I have a

[4:25] different feeling now and I said oh

[4:32] that's fine that's good and again she

[4:36] was a little disconcerted because the

[4:37] convention response would have been

[4:40] which I did too I just put another ad in

[4:43] the paper and now you're telling me this

[4:50] this this is how to make the

[4:53] conventional responses are how to make

[4:56] life complicated for yourself and others

[4:59] but it's normal it's how the ego

[5:02] responds and so whenever somebody does

[5:06] not respond in that way life becomes

[5:09] simple but when life becomes simple

[5:13] people who expect the conventional

[5:15] responses become confused this is a

[5:19] beard person and so she decided to stay

[5:26] and a few weeks later when I got to know

[5:30] her better she explained to me that the

[5:34] that first night she was in her bedroom

[5:36] and she said I found you so weird that

[5:42] ice I thought you might creep in in the

[5:45] middle of the night and murder here

[5:57] [Music]

[6:05] and later he said living in the same

[6:10] house with you is like living in a float

[6:12] tank I think she learned a lot not so

[6:27] much through me explaining things to her

[6:29] just by being there not that she didn't

[6:35] go through her episodes of neurotic

[6:40] reactivity which is quite normal for

[6:43] most people but that's fine

[6:47] so feelings you know where did have hurt

[6:51] the initial feelings that she

[6:53] experienced that she that she then

[6:58] believes that they were a correct guide

[7:02] for action of course they were not

[7:05] because they originated in fear and they

[7:10] were also originated in a

[7:12] misinterpretation of reality which is so

[7:16] easy to do for the mind to misinterpret

[7:18] another person to misinterpret a

[7:22] situation you misinterpret because you

[7:25] see it through the conditioning of your

[7:28] mind you see it through your beliefs

[7:34] your prior experiences in childhood you

[7:38] see it through even other things that

[7:41] have conditioned your mind maybe even

[7:44] scary movies about weird people who

[7:47] don't say much

[7:50] and then just when you're having a

[7:53] shower they creep in so the it is not

[8:08] therefore it's not that easy often to

[8:13] say where does this feeling that I have

[8:16] arise where does this feeling originate

[8:22] now does it come from a deeper the

[8:25] intuitive place the intuition comes out

[8:28] of being present intuition is not does

[8:33] not come out of the conditioning of your

[8:35] mind so if you have if you have an

[8:41] intuition also it is usually not tainted

[8:46] by negativity such as anger or fear so

[8:54] there's something certain about it there

[8:58] is a quiet strength behind your feeling

[9:02] a quiet strength there's not a nervous

[9:05] energy behind your feeling it's more you

[9:11] just know this is this is right you may

[9:15] not be able to explain to yourself or

[9:18] others why as a different quality

[9:22] there's a more a peaceful quality to it

[9:25] now let's just imagine to come back to

[9:29] the the story that happened with this

[9:33] young woman of course it could have been

[9:42] that theoretically I could have been a

[9:48] psycho and actually could not be trusted

[9:56] not to kill her theoretically that's

[10:00] possible

[10:02] so I don't know what the what the answer

[10:07] to this is but the I know from my own

[10:15] life whenever there is a deep

[10:18] realization of what the right course of

[10:21] action is it is always there's a peace

[10:24] with it and even if there's a cycle

[10:26] there you know in a you know with

[10:30] absolute certainty that this is not

[10:33] right for you there's an energetic

[10:35] imbalance which comes from a deeper

[10:38] place but I cannot really explain in

[10:40] words you have too few life experience

[10:44] you have to find out for yourself what a

[10:48] deeper feeling that comes out of

[10:50] presence and it is a true intuition how

[10:54] it is different from something that is

[10:58] that arises from the conditioning of

[11:00] your mind now a lot of the time people

[11:10] misinterpret reality because they look

[11:14] at reality through the veil of their

[11:18] conditioning and that that contributes

[11:21] to a huge amount of conflict in life in

[11:26] relationships and so on and not only

[11:30] they misinterpret they add this what I

[11:33] call unnecessary baggage to situations

[11:37] through their reactivity which is an ego

[11:42] device in order to strengthen the egos

[11:45] always deficient sense of identity so

[11:51] coming back again to that story well it

[11:53] happened if I had reacted in the normal

[11:59] way becoming angry and accusing her when

[12:04] she said after one night she couldn't

[12:07] stay and they

[12:09] that would have strengthened the it

[12:13] would have come from my ego it would

[12:15] have strengthened my sense of self the

[12:18] separate sense of self and again the if

[12:22] the reaction had been when she finally

[12:24] decided just after the second night

[12:26] decided to stay

[12:27] I could have seconds that I've just

[12:30] spent I mean it wasn't that much an ad

[12:33] in the local paper it was relatively

[12:36] cheap but the ego would have dwelt on

[12:39] that and said no I've spent that and all

[12:42] these people that I already said they

[12:44] couldn't come now they have they have

[12:45] already found accommodation I would have

[12:48] again made summaries wrong and the ego

[12:51] loves that to make somebody wrong

[12:53] because when you make somebody wrong and

[12:56] you would be the ego could even explain

[12:58] you a totally justified because that's

[13:00] not fair the person shouldn't just

[13:02] change like that she's just but instead

[13:07] of saying of how people showed me a few

[13:08] just did this is what is you can either

[13:11] accept it or you cannot I could have

[13:15] said also in practical terms that when

[13:17] after the second night she said I've

[13:20] decided to stay I could have said oh

[13:23] it's too late I've already had found

[13:25] somebody else or it said no it may be

[13:31] but it maybe it's better if you do go

[13:33] because tomorrow night you might again

[13:36] from after tomorrow you might again not

[13:38] wants to stay all these things are

[13:41] possible but the situation remained

[13:44] simple because of non reactivity and

[13:49] this applies to so many cases whenever

[13:52] there's some kind of things do not go

[13:56] smoothly because a person does not do

[13:58] what they're supposed to do and then

[14:01] immediately the ego constructs a

[14:04] narrative and you know it when you start

[14:07] telling other people about it it

[14:08] strengthens it so I could have picked up

[14:11] the phone and said you know I had this

[14:12] this girl I've I'd rejected five other

[14:17] people for her know what she's done to

[14:19] me

[14:20] under listenin tell the story it's so

[14:24] satisfying to the ego and then we

[14:27] personally are the other answers oh my

[14:29] god you search through and then of

[14:35] course the you and I could have gone

[14:41] into thinking oh maybe she's she's

[14:44] totally neurotic maybe she's a psycho

[14:49] all the spinning tales in the head all

[14:53] kinds of things this a whole fictitious

[14:57] narratives that are taken from reality

[15:01] that's how simple things can actually be

[15:05] if you don't add unnecessary reactivity

[15:10] to it but in order to do that it

[15:13] requires you to be present not to be a

[15:18] part not to be there's a person because

[15:22] a person feels easily offended so if

[15:26] you're there's a person you get offended

[15:28] a lot if you go on the internet you'll

[15:35] find that the world is full of people

[15:38] who are deeply offended

[15:46] and they can explain mine it looks

[15:49] sounds totally reasonable

[15:52] the ego loves being offended I'm not

[16:03] denying that there may be some remarks

[16:06] that are truly offenses but that's a

[16:08] relatively small thing and if it is

[16:10] something truly offensive again what

[16:19] could she have said what that was truly

[16:21] if and she could have said I can't stay

[16:24] with you because you are too ugly

[16:33] now to the ego that would be offensive

[16:36] or she might have said well she happened

[16:40] to be white but you've not been watching

[16:42] it I said I've just

[16:44] I finally I have this feeling I cannot

[16:45] stay with a white male okay vigilance is

[17:01] required in your interactions with

[17:04] people what is the question am i adding

[17:07] something to the interaction that is

[17:08] unnecessary that is just there to

[17:11] strengthen my fictitious sense of self

[17:14] to justify some to make somebody wrong

[17:18] big thing for the ego because if I if I

[17:23] can make something wrong there's always

[17:26] an element of victimhood when I make

[17:28] somebody wrong in relation to myself

[17:32] there's always an element of it may not

[17:35] be the main focal point but there's an

[17:38] element of me being the victim if I make

[17:41] you wrong and the ego loves that because

[17:46] it strengthens itself through that and

[17:52] if I make somebody wrong you know what

[17:54] he said and what he did then let me tell

[17:58] you about this oh how can somebody do

[18:02] something like that

[18:04] and this means unconsciously I'm always

[18:13] superior to the other when this happens

[18:17] when you're telling the story about what

[18:19] somebody didn't say to you you do it

[18:22] because the ego when you're telling when

[18:24] you're making somebody wrong because

[18:25] when you are right now you prove you

[18:28] probably all know people in your life

[18:32] when they talk when you tell when they

[18:35] tell you things it's always others who

[18:38] are wrong it's never then it's very

[18:43] strange why is it that I am always right

[18:46] and others are

[18:47] as long they never asked that question

[18:49] but that is a mystery of human existence

[18:53] one of the great mysteries of life is

[18:56] why I am always right and others are

[18:59] always wrong

[19:00] I think philosophers haven't explored

[19:03] yet in detail enough and nobody has

[19:08] resolved this mystery and everybody

[19:11] should ask themselves how is that I must

[19:14] be really superior to everybody weird so

[19:31] if you think back the last year or two

[19:34] or three in your life well I'm actually

[19:40] talking to a group of people here who

[19:45] are more much more conscious than the

[19:48] average human

[19:49] but nevertheless even here some of you

[19:54] may find if you look back the last few

[19:57] years that whenever there was some kind

[19:59] of argument or conflict perhaps it was

[20:04] was it always the others who were wrong

[20:10] it's very easy to deny somebody's

[20:14] perspective if it conflicts with your

[20:19] own and make them totally wrong you can

[20:22] also make a group of people totally

[20:25] wrong an entire group entire nation an

[20:29] entire religion you can make everybody

[20:31] wrong it's great field strong guidance

[20:33] of morally superior now does that mean

[20:41] there are not people who are deeply

[20:43] wrong because they might give them maybe

[20:45] people out to deceive you

[20:48] you might go and want to you might go

[20:51] and wise buy a second-hand car into the

[20:55] person is so friendly and kind and he

[20:59] sells you some

[21:00] that's just break stuff down the next

[21:03] day and you get clearly lied to you what

[21:08] do you do then and even then it's

[21:10] important not to amplify what has

[21:16] happened by going into your mind and

[21:20] creating a whole string of narratives in

[21:25] your mind of what an awful person that

[21:28] is and coming to all kinds of

[21:31] conclusions about that and tell the

[21:33] story to yourself and to others and

[21:36] amplify it in that way and then you go

[21:37] back to him and and then you you tell

[21:41] him really what you think of him rather

[21:45] than keep it simple what what action can

[21:49] I take to remedy this even if you go to

[21:52] court you can do it in a detached way

[21:54] I'm not society saying never to do

[21:57] anything just put up with anything in

[22:00] anybody it's just it's not what it means

[22:02] even if you go to court in order to

[22:05] rectify a situation that is obviously

[22:08] too wrong you can do it in a way that is

[22:12] detached and just keeps it to thee just

[22:15] the essentials of the situation

[22:17] practical without the whole

[22:19] superstructure of you are the evil one

[22:23] you are wrong you all I won't repeat it

[22:34] here but I think you may all remember

[22:37] the story I told I believe it's in a new

[22:39] earth about the Zen master who was

[22:42] accused of having fathered a child and

[22:45] what his responses were at every stage

[22:48] of the process is that so now that's an

[22:53] interesting so did you if you may

[22:55] remember the parents accused him that he

[22:58] was the father of their daughter's child

[23:00] and then the pranced brought the baby to

[23:02] him and at each stage when he was

[23:05] the parents told him something you are

[23:07] the father you is that so

[23:09] you bring the bit now you look after the

[23:11] baby

[23:12] we don't want it you're the father and

[23:15] he had lost his reputation etc people

[23:18] were commenting about him on the

[23:20] internet and he did not participate in

[23:27] the story making and he didn't defend

[23:30] himself and he didn't interesting ok so

[23:34] it means a total refusal to go into any

[23:38] kind of story

[23:39] cut is that so yeah and finally it all

[23:48] became resolved resolved itself the

[23:51] daughter confessed that he was not the

[23:53] father and so on and the parents came

[23:55] wanted to baby back please give us the

[23:57] baby back we now know that oh you're not

[24:00] the father

[24:00] please forgive us we did a terrible

[24:03] thing by accusing you terrible thing is

[24:06] that so

[24:08] ok that is that whether this story

[24:12] actually ever happened I don't know

[24:13] whether it's just a teaching story or

[24:16] actually happened but it doesn't matter

[24:17] it's it shows you in the extreme form of

[24:22] not being engaged in a story not

[24:29] engaging in the story making that is

[24:32] that is ego strengthening so you can

[24:39] practice that in many many situations in

[24:41] your life refrain from calling up people

[24:47] or telling our people what other people

[24:49] and tell them about what other people

[24:50] did wrong or how they failed how they

[24:54] were deficient how somebody lied to you

[24:58] most dishonest or expressed an

[25:01] objectionable opinion and then conflict

[25:08] becomes almost eliminated from your life

[25:13] or 90% of it

True intuition carries quiet strength and peace, without nervous energy or explanation. Fear-based emotions are accompanied by anxiety, narrative urgency, and often come with complex explanations rooted in past conditioning. Intuition arrives with certainty; fear arrives with doubt and agitation.
You should acknowledge and observe your feelings, but distinguish between them. Fear-based feelings arising from the conditioned mind often misinterpret reality and lead to poor decisions. By cultivating presence, you can access genuine intuitive knowing that is not tainted by reactivity and actually serves as a reliable guide.
The mind filters all perception through conditioning—past experiences, beliefs, and cultural narratives. When this conditioned filter interprets a person or situation as threatening, the resulting feeling is intense and feels absolutely real. However, the interpretation itself is often inaccurate, not a reflection of what is actually present.
Intuition does not come from thinking or conditioning; it emerges from presence—a state of stillness beyond thought. When you are fully present, you are in direct contact with what actually is, and from that clarity, a deeper intelligence can express itself that is not distorted by fear or past patterns.
Notice when you are constructing a narrative that someone has treated you unfairly or behaved badly. Observe that the ego uses these stories to strengthen its sense of self. By staying present and refraining from elaborating the narrative, you interrupt the pattern and create space for genuine understanding and simpler relationships.
True intuition, which arises from presence and carries peaceful certainty, rarely steers you wrong. However, most feelings people call intuition are actually fear-based reactions from the conditioned mind. The key is learning to distinguish between the two through patient self-observation and developing familiarity with how genuine intuitive knowing feels in your body and being.
Acknowledging a feeling means noticing it is there and observing it without judgment. Trusting it as a guide means using it to make decisions. Tolle suggests doing the first always, but being discerning about the second. Not all feelings merit action; those arising from presence do, while those arising from fear-based conditioning often mislead.
The ego strengthens itself by creating and reinforcing stories of being wronged, misunderstood, or treated unfairly. When life does not go as expected, the ego immediately constructs a narrative to explain the situation in a way that makes the ego right. This story-making is a self-feeding mechanism that unnecessarily complicates what could remain simple through non-reactivity.
