Akaal Meditation: Connecting Beyond DeathThrough Mantra and Breath Work

Snatam Kaur
Snatam Kaur
Mar 17, 2022
9 min read

In this Akaal Meditation workshop, Snatam Kaur guides practitioners through a complete meditation session combining intention-setting, breath work (pranayama), gentle yoga, and the chanting of the Akaal mantra—which means "beyond or without death." The practice serves dual purposes: honoring those who have passed while helping the living tap into the soul's inherent deathlessness and infinity. Rather than a ceremony solely for the grieving, Akaal becomes a tool for accessing the courage and stability of the soul's vibration in daily life, offering a direct counterpoint to the fleeting, chaotic nature of the external world.

What Does Akaal Mean and Why Chant It?

Akaal literally translates to "beyond or without death," a mantra traditionally chanted for loved ones who have recently passed. The word carries the frequency of the soul's deathlessness—a timeless awareness that transcends the body's temporary nature. In the workshop, Snatam explains that while many use Akaal as a way to connect with and honor someone who has left their body, the mantra's power extends far beyond grief work. By chanting Akaal, practitioners cultivate a direct relationship with the nature of the soul itself, experiencing what Snatam calls "soul vibration" and "deathlessness space."

This reorientation is crucial in Snatam's teaching. She emphasizes that accessing the soul's frequency isn't abstract philosophy—it's a felt, embodied experience that changes how we live. When we chant Akaal, we're not bypassing the grief or complexity of loss; rather, we're tuning into a stable frequency beneath and beyond the mind's chatter. As Snatam states early in the workshop, "if we can tap into our experience of the soul, perhaps we can live with courage." The mantra becomes a bridge between inner infinity and outer engagement.

Why Meditation on Deathlessness Matters in a Chaotic World

One of Snatam's central teachings is that the world's apparent chaos stems from consciousness identified only with the temporary. She explains: "if that's all we have to relate to is just this life and its fleeting nature, everything about it is its nature is madness nearly because it's just so fleeting—it comes and goes, comes and goes, comes and goes. Everything is temporary, everything is constantly changing." When we root our identity only in the changeable external world, we inherit that world's instability.

The antidote, according to Snatam, is to locate the witness of change—the soul, the awareness that observes life's flux without being swept away by it. "But if we tap into that soul which we are, the one who is experiencing the life, the one who is aware of the life, aware of all the temporary changes, and we have a sense of that infinity just by going through it, having that space of the soul of the infinity, then we have something much greater to relate to." This isn't escapism; it's the foundation for conscious engagement. Once we find that "light and love nourished," Snatam teaches, we can re-enter the world changed—watering the seeds of compassion and clarity within ourselves and others.

The Structure of the Workshop: Intention, Breath, Movement, and Mantra

The workshop unfolds in three main phases: intention-setting and philosophy, pranayama (controlled breathing) and gentle yoga, and the sustained chanting of Akaal. This progression is deliberate, designed to settle the mind and body before entering the mantra practice.

Opening and Dedication: Snatam opens by establishing the container for the class. She dedicates the practice to the people of Ukraine and Russia during a moment of international conflict, transforming the meditation room into a space of prayer and consciousness-shifting. She also dedicates the practice to each participant's own soul evolution. This sets the stage for the work: we are not isolated individuals meditating alone, but a collective consciousness united in accessing deathlessness and courage.

The Tuning In Mantra (Adi Mantra): Before any breath work, the group chants the "Gurudev" tuning-in mantra: "Gurudev, Gurudev, Gurudev, Gurudev / Guro Devo Mohe Ao / Jug Aad Anee / Satgure Promo Ao / Siri Gurudev Devay / Namo Namo." Snatam clarifies that this is not about bowing to an external teacher or deity. Rather, it's an act of letting go—releasing "our agendas, our expectations, our thoughts, our to-do lists" to come into presence. The bowing is an internal gesture toward the wisdom within all beings. She emphasizes: "this is an act of really letting go and it's an act of coming into presence."

Pranayama: Building Energetic Capacity Through Breath

The workshop includes a detailed practice of alternate nostril breathing (Nadi Shodhana), a foundational pranayama technique. The pattern Snatam guides is:

  • Inhale through the left nostril for a count of 8
  • Hold both nostrils closed for a count of 8
  • Exhale through the right nostril for a count of 4
  • Repeat on the opposite side
  • Progress to longer holds (counts of 16), building breath capacity

Pranayama, meaning "extension of prana" (life force), directly affects the nervous system and energetic body. By controlling the breath through rhythmic patterns, practitioners calm the fight-or-flight response and activate the parasympathetic nervous system—the body's relaxation response. Snatam notes that exercises like alternate nostril breathing help "shift our energy patterns within our being" and allow consciousness to settle from the agitated mind into deeper awareness.

Sufi Grinds and Spinal Rotations: Awakening the Base Energy

After pranayama, the workshop moves into a gentle yoga movement called Sufi Grinds—circular rotations of the pelvis and spine. As participants circle the pelvis forward on an inhale and back on an exhale, they can vibrate the mantra "Sat Nam" (Truth is the name, or the name of the One/Reality). The practice serves multiple purposes: it lubricates the spine, awakens the root chakra (muladhara), and strengthens awareness at the base of the body, where grounding energy originates.

Snatam guides additional movements throughout the workshop—forward folds, leg spreads, and arm extensions—all designed to release tension and "build our energy." She notes that these physical practices are not merely stretching; they're ways of communicating with the body's intelligence and preparing it to hold the frequency of the Akaal mantra.

The Akaal Mantra Chanting: Sustaining the Soul's Frequency

The core of the workshop is the prolonged chanting of Akaal. Sitting upright with hands in a gesture of openness (palms facing forward), participants chant "Akaal" repeatedly, allowing the sound vibration to resonate through the body. Snatam encourages practitioners to "allow your voice to open" and to "connect with the deathlessness space" within. The chanting is not about perfect pitch or pronunciation; it's about sustained intention and vibration.

She teaches that chanting can serve those who have passed—"we can chant Akaal for somebody that has recently passed"—and simultaneously for the living. By sinking into what she calls "soul space," practitioners experience their own infinity. This is the heart of the practice: moving from intellectual understanding ("deathlessness is real") to direct, felt experience through the vehicle of sound and breath.

Bringing Practice Into Daily Life

A repeated theme in the workshop is integration. Snatam stresses that "it's so important that we can engage consciously, so that we can be present, tap back in." The practice is not meant to be a retreat from the world, but a return to the world nourished. She describes this as "tending a garden"—the mantra and meditation practice are seeds that, when watered regularly, grow into resilience and wisdom in daily life.

For practitioners new to mantra meditation, Snatam's invitation is simple: "may this also become a daily practice—this mantra, any mantra, this yoga, any yoga—that we continuously tap in, nourish, rejuvenate to live by that frequency of the soul." The practice doesn't require belief; it requires only willingness to show up and feel the vibration.

The Broader Context: Kirtan and Kundalini Tradition

This workshop is part of Snatam Kaur's Mantra and Meditation Series, released from her 2022 album Nirankaar. The tracks are specifically designed for group chanting and meditation, with musical arrangements that support rather than distract from the inner experience. The workshop itself is offered through Kirtan and Kundalini, an online school co-founded by Snatam and her husband Sopurkh Singh in 2020.

Kirtan and Kundalini draws from the Sikh mystical tradition, where kirtan (call-and-response chanting) and kundalini yoga (practices designed to raise consciousness through the spine) are central disciplines. The school serves a global community, offering live and recorded classes in mantra, tabla (Indian percussion), harmonium (hand organ), yoga, and meditation. Snatam personally teaches weekly Mantra and Meditation classes that often include breath work and light yoga, alongside courses for those learning harmonium.

The Philosophy Behind Practice: Finding the Infinite Within

Underlying the entire workshop is a coherent spiritual philosophy: the infinite, deathless soul is not distant or theoretical—it exists within you right now, accessible through direct practice. As Snatam says, "the good news is we find it right inside ourselves. It's not something we have to go out, buy, look for, someone else needs to tell us. We're just here practicing together. That's right inside of us."

This teaching aligns with Sikh Gurbani (the teachings of the Sikh Gurus), which emphasize that the divine is immanent—present within all consciousness. The practices of mantra and meditation are not requests to a distant god; they are attunements to the wisdom and love already resident in the soul. The external world's chaos matters, and compassionate action matters. But action rooted in the soul's frequency is different from action rooted only in reactivity and ego. "If we're just trying to relate to the world without anything to relate from, without relating from any place but just identifying with the world, oh my god, I mean I can't even talk about it, it's just so chaotic," Snatam reflects.

Where to Go From Here

If this workshop resonates with you, consider establishing a daily meditation practice. Even ten minutes of alternate nostril breathing (pranayama) followed by chanting a mantra—Akaal or another—can begin to shift your nervous system and access the soul's frequency. Snatam's Kirtan and Kundalini online school offers structured classes, courses, and a community for deeper study. Explore recordings of the Akaal mantra from her Nirankaar album, designed specifically for solo or group chanting. If you're grieving, know that this practice honors those who have passed while also nourishing the living. If you're seeking stability in a chaotic world, the practice offers an anchor—not an escape, but a ground from which to engage with clarity and compassion. The soul's deathlessness is not a concept to believe in; it's a frequency to embody through your own practice.

[0:21] experience

[0:23] um it's so

[0:27] um

[0:28] beautiful to join with all of you

[0:31] and

[0:33] if you're new to

[0:35] this class we'll do a little bit of

[0:38] um

[0:40] breath work a little bit of yoga and

[0:42] chanting

[0:43] to experience this very powerful mantra

[0:46] akal

[0:48] which means beyond death

[0:50] going into the

[0:53] really the energy of the soul

[0:56] and um

[1:00] we chant

[1:02] we can chant a call

[1:04] for somebody that has recently passed

[1:06] and we will do that today in this class

[1:09] and especially dedicate this to

[1:13] the ukrainian and russian people in that

[1:19] terrible situation there and now

[1:22] for all those that have passed

[1:24] we're also

[1:25] it to

[1:27] those folks as well

[1:29] to come into

[1:31] frequency with soul vibration courage

[1:34] vibration

[1:35] which is the energy of the soul

[1:37] deathlessness if we can tap into our

[1:42] experience of the soul perhaps we can

[1:45] live

[1:46] with

[1:47] courage if we can

[1:49] as tiknot han

[1:51] tahot about how important it is to

[1:53] actually meditate on our death to

[1:56] meditate on that

[1:57] experience and a call

[1:59] we can apply that

[2:02] same

[2:03] focus to

[2:06] meditate on the deathlessness of the

[2:08] soul

[2:10] and thereby

[2:12] live by that

[2:13] and so again we dedicate this energy to

[2:17] to the people of ukraine and russia

[2:21] um there are many many russians standing

[2:24] up for peace

[2:26] in the world really yeah

[2:29] and the world yeah and

[2:31] and then we want to also dedicate this

[2:33] energy to each of you for coming if

[2:36] you're sitting here right now in this

[2:37] live class or

[2:39] watching a recording that

[2:41] that this energy of a call can serve you

[2:44] in your life to

[2:46] live and serve us in our lives because

[2:49] we we join you

[2:51] in this

[2:52] experience today

[2:54] that we can

[2:56] really tap into the frequency the energy

[2:59] of the soul

[3:01] and live by this frequency

[3:03] to live by

[3:05] our own

[3:08] infinity

[3:10] and

[3:12] this can perhaps allow us to

[3:15] have a lift above the chatter of the

[3:18] mind

[3:19] to

[3:22] find our light our love

[3:24] and

[3:26] and then

[3:27] here's the important part is to re-enter

[3:29] into our lives

[3:31] we enter into who we are

[3:34] um

[3:35] with that light and love

[3:37] nourished and

[3:39] it's like watering a

[3:41] watering a seed

[3:43] tending to a garden

[3:45] and so may this also become a

[3:49] a practice a daily practice this mantra

[3:54] any mantra this yoga any yoga

[3:57] that we but that we

[3:59] continuously tap in nourish

[4:02] rejuvenate

[4:05] to live by that frequency of the soul

[4:09] so

[4:10] because this life is fleeting

[4:13] you know and if in

[4:15] if that's all we have to relate to is

[4:18] just this life

[4:20] and its fleeting nature

[4:23] you know everything about it is

[4:26] its nature is madness nearly

[4:31] because it's just so fleeting it comes

[4:34] and goes comes and goes comes and goes

[4:36] everything is temporary everything is

[4:38] constantly changing

[4:40] and if that's

[4:44] where our consciousness

[4:47] is and

[4:48] dwells

[4:50] then that will

[4:52] be our

[4:54] our

[4:55] life but if we tap into that soul which

[4:59] we are

[5:01] the one who was experiencing the life

[5:04] the one who is aware of the life

[5:07] aware of all the temporary changes

[5:11] and we have a sense of that infinity

[5:13] just by

[5:16] going through it

[5:19] having

[5:21] that

[5:23] space

[5:26] of the soul of the infinity

[5:30] then we have something much greater to

[5:32] relate to and the good news is we find

[5:34] it right inside ourself it's not

[5:36] something we have to go out

[5:39] buy look for

[5:41] someone else needs to tell us

[5:43] we're just here practicing together

[5:47] that's right inside of us

[5:49] i just wanted to add that a little bit

[5:53] um

[5:54] because it's not like the exterior world

[5:57] is really going to change

[6:01] until we

[6:03] go inside and find that which is

[6:08] you know the source of love

[6:10] and then when we bring that out into the

[6:12] world but if we're just trying to relate

[6:14] to the world

[6:16] you know without

[6:18] anything

[6:19] um to you know not relating from any

[6:22] place but just identifying with the

[6:24] world

[6:27] oh my god i mean i can't even talk about

[6:29] it it's just

[6:30] so chaotic

[6:32] so maybe you're feeling that and so may

[6:35] this

[6:36] be an opportunity

[6:38] to connect with

[6:41] your true self

[6:43] why could it well you do and it's so

[6:45] important

[6:47] as well it's so important so that we can

[6:49] engage consciously

[6:53] so that we can be present

[6:55] to

[6:57] tap back in

[6:59] and

[7:01] it's going to require a little bit of

[7:04] um

[7:06] intention and focus right now in this

[7:08] time this short time that we have

[7:10] together

[7:11] so i just invite you to

[7:14] give yourself this space soul nurturing

[7:17] space

[7:19] and then you can re-engage

[7:21] you can do all the things but

[7:24] after

[7:26] but what happened before what happened

[7:28] after what happens after

[7:30] we're going to leave that and just come

[7:32] into presence right now

[7:34] so we'll begin with the tuning in mantra

[7:40] gurudev

[7:43] divine

[7:45] energy of the universe that manifests

[7:48] into this earth plane namo i bow to that

[7:52] guru dev

[7:53] angelic divine teacher nomo i bow

[7:57] angelic divine wisdom

[8:01] this

[8:02] this doesn't have to this is not about

[8:05] an entity of a teacher that we're bowing

[8:08] to it's about

[8:09] connecting with

[8:11] that

[8:13] energy of wisdom within you

[8:15] within all beings and if that happens to

[8:17] manifest

[8:19] in the form of a teacher that you relate

[8:21] to great but it can also be

[8:25] the wisdom within

[8:29] then

[8:30] primal wisdom

[8:32] primal teacher primal guru i bow

[8:35] jugaad good anime throughout the ages i

[8:38] bow

[8:39] satgure to that true one here and now i

[8:42] bow

[8:43] siri gurudev

[8:45] great divine one i bow

[8:48] and this bowing is

[8:50] is

[8:51] is an act of really letting go

[8:54] and it's an act of coming into presence

[8:58] so letting go of our agendas

[9:02] our expectations our thoughts

[9:05] our to-do lists

[9:07] it's

[9:09] bowing and

[9:11] letting those things go

[9:13] so that we can be in a place of merger

[9:15] with

[9:16] our wisdom within

[9:17] so we'll bring the palms together at the

[9:19] center of the chest

[9:22] and you can just rub the palms together

[9:25] just to

[9:28] come into relationship with the heart

[9:30] center

[9:31] hands at the heart stealing the palms

[9:33] take a deep breath inhale

[9:36] exhale

[9:40] and now we'll inhale to tune in

[9:46] [Music]

[9:59] good

[10:06] now

[10:16] [Laughter]

[10:30] [Music]

[10:38] oh

[10:49] [Music]

[10:58] [Music]

[11:07] [Music]

[11:28] [Music]

[11:39] [Music]

[11:41] is me

[11:56] all right let's relax the hands down

[11:59] and

[12:01] yeah i invited many of you that you as

[12:04] you'd like to turn on your video so we

[12:06] can see and

[12:08] interact

[12:09] um

[12:10] and so potaka is going to be our model

[12:13] today

[12:15] so we'll begin with a little bit of

[12:16] pranayama

[12:21] that's silly

[12:22] okay

[12:24] all right

[12:25] hey

[12:26] i thought i was modeling nope

[12:29] not very good at it i know all right

[12:32] okay

[12:37] so you're gonna cover the

[12:39] right nostril

[12:41] and we're gonna inhale slowly through

[12:44] the left for a count of eight

[12:49] cover both nostrils

[12:51] for a count of eight

[12:58] and then exhale through the right

[13:00] nostril for a count of four

[13:07] inhale through the right nostril count

[13:09] of eight

[13:13] covering both nostrils

[13:16] for a count of eight

[13:28] and exhale through the left nostril

[13:31] for a count of four

[13:36] and now inhale

[13:37] through the left nostril or count of

[13:39] eight

[13:41] nice and slow

[13:44] and now hold the breath for a count of

[13:46] sixteen one

[13:48] 2

[13:48] 3

[13:49] 4

[13:50] 5

[13:51] 6

[13:52] 7

[13:53] 8

[13:54] 9

[13:55] 10

[13:56] 11 12

[13:58] 13 14 15 16

[14:01] and exhale through the right nostril for

[14:03] a count of eight one

[14:05] two

[14:06] three four five six seven

[14:10] eight

[14:11] inhale through the right nostril

[14:18] and hold

[14:20] closing both nostrils

[14:38] and exhale through the left nostril

[14:46] inhale through the left nostril

[14:51] nice and slow

[14:52] and hold

[15:08] and exhale through the right nostril

[15:17] inhale through the right nostril

[15:23] and covering both nostrils hold

[15:41] and exhale through the left nostril

[15:50] inhale through the left nostril

[15:57] covering both nostrils hold

[16:15] and exhale through the right nostril

[16:18] nice and slow

[16:20] count of eight

[16:25] inhale through the right nostril

[16:27] nice and slow count of eight

[16:32] and covering both nostrils

[16:35] for a count of 16 hold the breath in

[16:54] and exhale through the left nostril

[17:02] last cycle inhale through the left

[17:04] nostril

[17:09] closing both nostrils hold

[17:26] and exhale through the right nostril

[17:33] and now just bring both hands into gyan

[17:35] mudra thumb and pointer finger at the

[17:38] knee

[17:39] and take some deep breaths into the base

[17:41] of the spine

[17:48] allowing your awareness

[17:52] to

[17:54] strengthen to come into

[17:56] being

[18:00] as you let go of thoughts perhaps

[18:11] and just feel the sensation of being

[18:49] and let's take a deep breath together

[18:51] inhale

[18:55] and exhale

[18:58] and now please have your hands

[19:00] on your knees and we'll begin to rotate

[19:03] about the spine and sufi grind

[19:06] so circling the pelvis forward inhale

[19:08] deeply

[19:10] and then exhale as the pelvis circles

[19:12] back

[19:14] and continue in this manner

[20:01] inhaling forward you can vibrate the

[20:04] mantra

[20:05] which means truth

[20:07] nam

[20:08] you can vibrate nam as you exhale

[20:11] exhaling nam

[20:13] which means name of the one

[20:17] and this name of the one is the

[20:22] is the is-ness

[20:24] within

[20:28] is the primal identity

[20:32] so tapping into the true

[20:37] self identity of the one

[20:40] within

[21:07] and now as you come forward i invite you

[21:10] to then switch directions so now

[21:13] moving in the opposite direction

[21:15] inhaling forward and exhaling back

[21:36] so it's important to

[21:39] take these moments to breathe

[21:45] often because of past experiences

[21:47] whether it's this lifetime or a previous

[21:49] lifetime

[21:52] or even in

[21:54] this lifetime

[21:55] in this moment even

[21:57] engaging with news and

[22:00] the stresses of life we can be in a

[22:02] fight or flight

[22:04] sensation

[22:11] so

[22:13] in recognizing the safety and

[22:16] recognizing the peace

[22:21] that's within we can

[22:27] nourish ourselves

[22:33] and then therefore nourish

[22:36] the world through our presence

[22:43] through our conscious action

[22:53] so it is important to

[22:58] recognize the fight-or-flight identity

[23:05] recognize where you are

[23:17] nourish the inner sanctum of safety and

[23:21] love

[23:27] and then we'll vibrate that into the

[23:29] world

[23:33] inhaling forward in the center point

[23:40] and exhale

[23:45] alright wonderful

[23:46] now please

[23:48] stretch both legs out in either

[23:50] direction

[23:51] we're going to do we're just doing some

[23:53] warm-ups here

[24:02] so if you're new to this class

[24:05] we do yoga and breath work

[24:08] because the body when we chant mantra

[24:10] becomes the vehicle of the mantra on

[24:13] this planet

[24:14] so we're

[24:17] cleaning that vehicle establishing the

[24:20] sacred

[24:21] energy of the breath within

[24:24] so inhale and let's

[24:26] raise the arms up

[24:29] stretching the spine exhale down to

[24:32] either side and then inhale up in the

[24:34] center stretching the arms up

[24:37] and exhale bringing your torso down

[24:40] to the knee

[24:42] so it's not necessarily about

[24:45] creating a touch point of the forehead

[24:47] to the leg although maybe some people

[24:50] can do that

[24:51] but it's about stretching

[24:54] the torso

[24:56] down towards

[24:57] the leg in its full entirety

[25:01] and feeling a nice stretch

[25:04] in the legs

[26:53] and let's inhale stretch both arms up

[26:55] reach reach reach

[27:00] and exhale and release

[27:05] wonderful all right now please come on

[27:08] to your

[27:09] um into a squatting position

[27:17] and bringing the heels together this is

[27:20] frog pose

[27:24] we're going to inhale

[27:26] pushing the buttocks up high into the

[27:28] air forehead to the shins

[27:30] and exhale back to your starting point

[27:33] chest open

[27:35] inhaling up

[27:37] and exhaling down and please go at your

[27:39] own pace

[27:41] if this is physically not possible for

[27:44] you

[27:45] you can lie on the back

[27:48] and

[27:50] bringing the heels together push the

[27:52] feet up towards the ceiling

[27:55] and making that your inhale and then

[27:57] exhale back down

[28:00] with the heels

[28:05] together and so pretty is demonstrating

[28:08] that

[28:21] so i invite you to take this time for

[28:24] self-nourishment

[28:26] self-awareness

[28:28] inhaling sat

[28:30] exhaling numb

[28:32] tapping in

[28:37] tapping into the self

[28:40] tapping into the breath

[28:45] just a few more here

[29:26] and please inhale

[29:29] in the upward position

[29:31] and really just stretch even allow

[29:34] the hands to hang

[29:37] or if you're on your back really stretch

[29:39] the legs and pull the toes back

[29:43] breathe a little bit

[29:46] and

[29:48] then

[29:52] release the posture and

[29:54] come onto your hands and knees for the

[29:56] final warm up

[30:00] so the hands and knees in

[30:03] what we call cat cow pose

[30:06] inhale sink the belly towards the floor

[30:11] shoulders back

[30:13] forehead up that's your inhale exhale

[30:15] bring your

[30:16] chin to your chest

[30:19] arching the spine up towards the ceiling

[30:26] and before i do

[30:28] any kind of singing

[30:31] i like to have my spine nice and warmed

[30:33] up

[30:35] because i love the feeling of

[30:38] singing with a warmed up spine

[30:42] it feels free

[30:44] it feels wonderful so

[30:47] inhale exhale feeling that spine warming

[30:50] up

[31:32] okay

[31:32] and inhale sink the belly towards the

[31:35] ground

[31:38] spread the shoulders

[31:42] and exhale chin to the chest back up

[31:44] towards the

[31:46] ceiling and really feel a nice good

[31:48] stretch

[31:50] and then release coming out of the

[31:53] posture

[31:54] and bringing yourself onto your back

[31:57] please

[32:04] okay

[32:06] so lying on the back

[32:09] we're going to

[32:11] have the feet together pointing the toes

[32:17] and

[32:21] and then you want to slowly inhale and

[32:24] raise both legs up 90 degrees up into

[32:28] the sky

[32:30] and that's your inhale

[32:32] and then exhale slowly lower your legs

[32:35] back down

[32:38] and you're going to continue

[32:41] in this slow fashion now

[32:43] if you need the support of your hands

[32:46] underneath your buttocks please go ahead

[32:49] and do that

[32:52] if you need to modify

[32:55] by bending your knees whatever you need

[32:58] to do

[33:00] go ahead and modify what we want to do

[33:03] is feel

[33:05] energy and a nice pressure at the navel

[33:07] center

[33:16] and we're going to be here for a little

[33:18] while

[33:20] so this is once again an opportunity to

[33:24] come into awareness

[33:28] come into presence of being

[33:33] most of our

[33:35] traumas and dramas at least i can speak

[33:39] from my own personal experience

[33:42] come from lack of my own presence

[33:46] in my own being

[33:50] and without that presence i wasn't able

[33:52] to be aware and present but the moment

[33:56] that i

[33:57] bring presence and awareness that

[33:59] is the presence of love on this planet

[34:06] that is courage that is truth

[34:11] so right now

[34:12] we're going to

[34:14] build up our bank account of presence

[34:17] we're going to build our

[34:19] muscles of presence

[34:23] of bringing ourselves back into

[34:26] just the breath

[34:28] just the movement

[34:35] inhaling as you raise the legs up

[34:38] exhaling as you lower them down

[35:07] you can also raise one leg at a time too

[35:11] if that's a needed modification

[35:21] you can also take breaks

[35:25] but as best as you can

[35:28] try and settle in on a consistent

[35:31] motion

[35:33] a rhythm even

[35:36] and stay with it

[35:48] the mind likes consistency

[35:52] responds well to it

[36:26] and with consistency we can also begin

[36:29] to

[36:30] shift our energy patterns within our

[36:32] body

[36:35] simple as the blood flow simple as the

[36:38] breath flow

[36:43] and as

[36:46] complex as the nervous system the

[36:48] glandular system

[38:11] last few seconds

[38:21] and together let's inhale bring both

[38:23] legs up stretch

[38:25] the legs up

[38:26] suspend the breath for a moment

[38:30] keeping the legs held up exhale in this

[38:33] position

[38:36] inhale in this position

[38:40] exhale

[38:42] and now inhale spread the legs as wide

[38:45] apart as possible

[38:48] and then exhale bringing them back again

[38:51] inhale spreading the legs as wide apart

[38:54] as possible exhaling them back up to

[38:57] parallel

[39:00] now this is

[39:03] a slow motion so we're not going to go

[39:05] incredibly fast

[39:07] and you're going to come back into

[39:09] your presence and your

[39:13] awareness and you are of course welcome

[39:16] to take breaks if you need to bend your

[39:19] knees if you need to bend your legs if

[39:21] you need to at the knees

[39:23] whatever you need

[39:27] come back come back to the

[39:30] best possible posture that you can do

[39:35] and move and once again with your

[39:37] awareness

[39:39] with your breath

[39:40] let's inhale and vibrate within set

[39:44] exhale

[39:45] knob

[41:48] with this exercise just focus on the

[41:51] sensation of stretching the legs

[41:55] feeling that nice stretch

[41:58] focus on the sensation of the breath

[42:04] you can anchor down into

[42:07] your awareness being in the naval center

[42:11] the heart

[42:12] and then

[42:13] the third eye

[42:16] close the eyes and feel these three

[42:18] centers

[42:19] navel heart third eye and breathe

[42:28] and wherever you need to take a break

[42:30] you can take a break

[42:34] we're on our

[42:35] last minute here

[42:40] resetting our vibration

[43:26] all right last few seconds last few

[43:29] times

[43:37] and make this your last exhale and then

[43:40] gently lower the legs down and just

[43:44] relax for a few moments

[43:46] and some people find it more relaxing to

[43:49] stretch the legs out you can also have

[43:52] your heels up by your buttocks to

[43:54] perhaps take some pressure off your

[43:57] lower back

[43:58] that works as well

[44:07] self-nourishing come back to

[44:10] self-nourishing thoughts

[44:15] inhaling set exhaling numb

[44:20] you can even

[44:21] modify you can say i am on the inhale

[44:25] you can say love on the exhale

[44:28] or i am on the inhale

[44:31] safe on the exhale

[44:34] find something

[44:36] that fills you with love

[44:40] that nourishes

[44:43] your inner sense of well-being

[45:00] all right now let's inhale and let's

[45:03] stretch both legs up 90 degrees again

[45:09] stretching both legs up on 90 degrees

[45:11] this is going to be your inhale your

[45:13] exhale you're going to rapidly kick the

[45:15] buttocks with both heels feet together

[45:18] inhaling up exhaling down

[45:21] now as fast as you can

[45:25] and the important motion here is really

[45:27] to straighten those legs

[45:30] on the inhale

[45:31] straighten those knees

[45:33] and then give it a good whack on the

[45:35] exhale row here just for a short short

[45:38] short short amount of time

[45:41] and i found this particular exercise to

[45:43] be really energizing

[46:26] so

[46:32] wonderful inhale stretch both legs up

[46:35] suspend the breath

[46:38] and exhale gently lower the legs down

[46:40] coming into relaxation position just for

[46:43] a moment

[47:03] all right moving on to the next exercise

[47:06] as you inhale

[47:08] raise the right leg and the left arm 90

[47:10] degrees

[47:13] exhale down

[47:15] inhale opposite

[47:17] exhale down

[47:19] and now go as rapidly as you can

[47:24] moving the body

[47:25] moving the breath

[47:28] opposite leg opposite arm up 90 degrees

[47:32] with each inhale

[47:40] filling yourself with love

[47:44] becoming an altar of love

[47:52] so that you can

[47:53] then

[47:55] send that energy out to

[47:57] all of creation

[47:59] through your being

[48:30] and inhale stretch both arms or

[48:34] one arm

[48:35] sorry inhale stretch both arms up exhale

[48:38] down

[48:40] exhale the arms down

[48:42] let's inhale stretch the left leg up and

[48:44] the right arm up

[48:47] suspend the breath momentarily exhale

[48:49] down

[48:51] inhale the opposite arm in the opposite

[48:54] leg

[48:56] and exhale down

[48:59] and relax for just a moment

[49:31] and now inhale together

[49:34] exhale together

[49:36] please bring the knees to the chest and

[49:38] let's rock up and down on the spine

[49:40] together

[49:49] and please come sitting up for

[49:52] meditation and i'd like to invite you to

[49:56] get settled we're gonna do

[50:00] about

[50:01] 20 minutes or so of meditation

[50:08] so if

[50:10] you know you can sit in easy pose

[50:13] and

[50:14] and also you can sit

[50:16] on a chair with

[50:17] both feet on the ground

[50:20] you can cover your spine

[50:28] these are all things that can help the

[50:30] meditation process and support you in it

[50:34] now the hands are going to be in yon

[50:36] mudra thumb and jupiter

[50:39] together hands will simply be at the

[50:42] knees

[50:43] and we're going to chant

[50:54] had is the energy of the divine

[50:58] of

[50:59] divine manifesting on this planet

[51:03] and its creativity

[51:09] and let's inhale to begin

[51:14] [Music]

[51:48] i

[51:50] [Music]

[52:00] a

[52:04] [Music]

[52:16] [Music]

[52:17] i

[52:19] [Music]

[52:27] [Music]

[52:42] [Music]

[52:44] foreign

[52:48] [Music]

[53:11] i

[53:16] [Music]

[53:23] [Music]

[53:25] i

[53:27] [Music]

[53:54] be

[53:58] [Music]

[54:09] hiding

[54:13] [Music]

[54:21] i

[54:23] [Music]

[54:29] inhale

[54:32] and suspend the breath

[54:39] and exhale

[54:47] and now bringing the palms so they face

[54:50] each other

[54:52] and they're in front of your diaphragm

[54:59] we're just going to

[55:01] move them up and down in opposite

[55:03] directions

[55:04] chanting hud

[55:06] very rapidly

[55:08] head head head head head head head head

[55:11] head head head head head head head head

[55:14] head head head head head head head head

[55:17] head head head head head head

[55:33] head head head head

[55:35] head

[55:36] had had an inhale allow the hands to be

[55:40] opposite inhale inhale

[55:43] hold the breath

[55:59] and

[56:01] exhale and now just allow the hands to

[56:04] come

[56:05] into gyan mudra gently

[56:08] thumb and pointer finger at the knees

[56:11] yan is wisdom

[56:14] is

[56:15] knowledge

[56:16] so tapping in to that inner

[56:20] wisdom that inner knowledge

[56:23] that inner knowingness

[56:35] and now we'll chant this sacred mantra a

[56:40] call

[56:41] call is death a call

[56:44] without death

[56:48] tuning in tapping into that essence

[56:51] that is without death

[56:53] that is within

[56:56] that is the nature of the soul

[57:03] allow the mantra to

[57:06] emanate from your heart

[57:11] allow yourself to connect with the

[57:13] heavenly energies

[57:17] being firmly rooted as you are to the

[57:19] ground

[57:24] through your body firmly rooted in this

[57:26] earth plane

[57:28] and yet allow the heart to open

[57:33] and for the energy

[57:35] of your soul to guide you

[57:39] in this experience of a call

[57:43] as we chant

[57:45] invite you to just have your eyes closed

[57:53] and feel the chant emanating from the

[57:55] heart center

[58:24] [Music]

[58:33] [Music]

[58:47] oh god

[58:51] allow the heart to open

[58:56] [Music]

[59:02] allow your voice to open

[59:05] [Music]

[59:14] [Music]

[59:23] occurs

[59:26] [Music]

[59:31] oh god

[59:35] [Music]

[59:41] [Music]

[59:52] [Music]

[59:59] oh god

[1:00:10] [Music]

[1:00:16] up

[1:00:20] [Music]

[1:00:34] oh god

[1:00:43] ah

[1:00:54] [Music]

[1:01:00] oh

[1:01:09] oh god

[1:01:22] [Music]

[1:01:27] oh god

[1:01:30] [Music]

[1:01:42] [Music]

[1:01:59] open the mouth open the heart

[1:02:17] fly free into the mantra

[1:02:32] [Music]

[1:02:38] oh

[1:02:47] oh god

[1:02:59] [Music]

[1:03:05] god

[1:03:08] [Music]

[1:03:17] [Music]

[1:03:24] [Music]

[1:03:32] ah

[1:03:49] oh god

[1:03:53] [Music]

[1:03:58] oh god

[1:04:02] [Music]

[1:04:16] oh

[1:04:25] oh god

[1:04:36] [Music]

[1:04:52] our god

[1:05:09] oh god

[1:05:15] the heart can take you there

[1:05:18] [Music]

[1:05:24] beyond fear beyond death

[1:05:31] [Music]

[1:05:36] our god

[1:05:43] [Music]

[1:05:54] oh god

[1:05:58] [Music]

[1:06:10] [Music]

[1:06:20] our god

[1:06:23] [Music]

[1:06:30] [Music]

[1:06:39] [Music]

[1:06:47] oh god

[1:06:50] [Music]

[1:06:56] [Music]

[1:07:05] oh god

[1:07:12] [Music]

[1:07:14] god

[1:07:18] [Music]

[1:07:24] [Music]

[1:07:28] coming back

[1:07:30] [Music]

[1:07:54] [Music]

[1:07:58] oh god

[1:08:05] [Music]

[1:08:16] oh god

[1:08:21] [Music]

[1:08:25] oh god

[1:08:29] [Music]

[1:08:43] oh god

[1:08:44] [Music]

[1:08:52] god

[1:08:53] [Music]

[1:08:59] [Music]

[1:09:09] oh god

[1:09:13] [Music]

[1:09:20] [Music]

[1:09:36] the gods

[1:09:38] [Music]

[1:09:54] oh god

[1:09:57] [Music]

[1:10:03] oh god

[1:10:07] [Music]

[1:10:15] [Music]

[1:10:20] oh god

[1:10:24] [Music]

[1:10:34] hold this precious breath

[1:10:37] in the sensation of alcohol

[1:10:43] magnify it from the heart center

[1:10:46] throughout your whole psyche

[1:10:48] and all around you

[1:10:57] and exhale

[1:11:01] inhale once again

[1:11:08] holding the breath allowing yourself to

[1:11:11] be in this vibration the space the

[1:11:14] psyche of a call

[1:11:23] and exhale

[1:11:26] relax the breath

[1:11:29] and now gently find your way to lying on

[1:11:32] the back

[1:11:35] we'll do a deep relaxation

[1:11:38] so if you have

[1:11:42] some things that cover yourself this is

[1:11:44] this can be a good idea

[1:11:48] and just allow yourself

[1:11:52] some moments here

[1:11:56] at the end of this class to

[1:12:00] relax

[1:12:12] [Music]

[1:12:26] just

[1:12:28] allow the feet to relax

[1:12:31] [Music]

[1:12:38] [Music]

[1:12:43] allow the hands to relax palms facing up

[1:12:46] towards the sky

[1:12:49] [Music]

[1:12:55] [Music]

[1:13:05] [Music]

[1:13:08] relaxing the feet

[1:13:10] allow the feet to relax

[1:13:20] [Music]

[1:13:25] relaxing the legs

[1:13:27] [Music]

[1:13:29] allow the legs

[1:13:32] [Music]

[1:13:42] allow the pelvis to sink down

[1:13:45] [Music]

[1:13:49] relaxing the belly

Got Questions?

Frequently Asked Questions

Akaal (meaning beyond or without death) is traditionally chanted to honor those who have passed and help them connect with the infinite. However, it also serves the living by cultivating a direct experience of the soul's deathlessness, courage, and stability—offering a counterpoint to the fleeting nature of the external world.
Alternate nostril breathing balances the nervous system, calming the fight-or-flight response and activating the parasympathetic (relaxation) nervous system. It also shifts energy patterns within the body, allowing consciousness to settle from an agitated mind into deeper awareness before mantra practice.
Yes. While Akaal is traditionally used to honor the deceased, the mantra also helps the living tap into the soul's infinite nature and experience deathlessness as a living frequency. This can build courage, reduce anxiety rooted in mortality, and provide a stable point of reference during chaos.
Kirtan is call-and-response mantra chanting, often accompanied by instruments like harmonium and tabla. Kundalini yoga is a system of postures, breathing, and meditation designed to raise consciousness through the spine. Both are used together in spiritual practice to activate and refine life-force energy.
Consistent daily practice, even for 10–20 minutes, is more effective than occasional longer sessions. Snatam encourages practitioners to establish a sustainable routine of mantra and yoga, treating it as 'tending a garden'—regular nourishment that grows resilience and access to the soul's frequency over time.
Soul vibration refers to the frequency or energy state of the soul—the deathless, infinite awareness within all beings. By chanting Akaal and practicing breath work, practitioners attune to this vibration directly, not through belief but through embodied experience of the mantra's sound and intention.
Yes, the workshop draws from Sikh mysticism and kundalini yoga tradition, where kirtan and mantra practice are central disciplines. However, Snatam teaches these practices as universal tools for accessing the soul's wisdom, regardless of religious background or belief system.
